Lonely Movie Time

what i'm listening to Right Now: Staple Singers - Let's Do It Again
_________________________

The other day Jaime and the girls went up to Richmond for, ahm, John Mayer. They said, "It was fine."

Dear Mr. Mayer,

It is not a good sign when someone describes your concert as "fine."

sincerely, Matthew

I didn't go to the concert. I went to a rock n roll club called Nanci Raygun. But it was closed. They said they'd be open when I called that afternoon, but they weren't open by 8:30 when I got there.

Instead I drove all up and down Monument Ave. admiring the, ahm, monuments.

See? I was driving the roundabout and took the picture. Not a safe driving idea.

Where are all the people at in this Town?? I guess they were all at the John Mayer show.

I stumbled onto this old theatre called The Westhampton. It was was showing "Shattered Glass" which I wanted to see.

Cool Lobby, huh? That's the popcorn counter to the left.

It used to have a balcony, but they converted the balcony to a second screen. It was so Crowded!!

Two more people showed up a little while later. And....the movie was really good, so you should see it

Michael Jackson's Thriller Mug Shot

what i'm listening to Right Now: The Sounds - Rock n Roll
__________________________

That Michael Jackson mugshot is FREAKIN' me out!!!! Tossing, turning, sweaty attempts to sleep. Very tense.

But I love Mike 'cause the first album I ever bought (and I mean EVER in my 26 years) was Thriller.

But that mug shot man! Check it out HERE (but don't say I didn't warn you).

Let Them Eat Lead hates me

what i'm listening to Right Now: The Velvet Underground, White Light/White Heat - Sister Ray
----------------------------------------

Well if you get the chance, pop on over and read this article.

It's not very flattering to me. But I don't blame the guy for his invective tone. No, I don't blame him because he COMPLETELY MISUNDERSTOOD what I was saying!!

He seems to think that I was attacking him personally and I WAS NOT DOING that!! I love "Let Them Eat Lead" and I read every one when they come out and I encourage you to do the same.

Read my original post of August 21, 2003. It's in the archives. I'm not as mean as he made me sound. I was just trying to say that the Yeah Yeah Yeah's album is good. He says it's not. I'm just not as articulate a writer as Max is so it's harder to make my opinions as clear. So he took it the wrong way.

He has different experiences than I do to base his opinions on. I enjoy the YYY's album because it's good. I've never seen them live so I base my opinion on my, as he said, "ignorance."

My Weblog is just that, a weblog (not a magazine). My little place to take stand and offer up my opinion (usually my gut, in-the-moment opinions) of what I'm digging in rock n roll.

I write of driving 5 hours to Baltimore to see Regina Spektor and the Strokes show. It cost me 150 bucks for food, gas, and tickets. I got back home at 3:30 am. Got just a couple hours sleep and went to work unshaven. I've written about many adventures like that. The Kimya Dawson/Tractenburg show in Charllotesville (2.5 hours one way on a work night), Mooney Suzuki/Longwave/Raveonettes in DC (3 hours one way on a work night), Siren festival (8 hours on a Greyhound one way). Someone remind Max that I did that. I made those time, money, and sleep sacrifices to gain the experiences he claims I lack.

So, yeah, go read the article if you want. He just thought I was insulting him, when I wasn't. Blame my poor writing skills I guess.

Here are the rest of the "Let Them Eat Lead" Archives which has some great articles. The new issue should be out soon. I'll be reading it as always.

Witch + Brody = Sarah

I was watching "Honeymoon in Vegas"on showtime tonight and I couldn't help but notice how hot Sarah Jessica Parker was.

Now, she looks too skinny. Bony face and yucky shoulder blades.

She was very slender in Honeymoon but she had a little bit more fullness in her face. Now she looks like a cross between the Wicked Witch of the West and oscar winner Adrian Brody. See:

what i'm listening to Right Now: Mando Diao - Sheepdog
_________________________

Well pitchfork finally weighs in on the Raveonettes. Gives it a 7.1. If you come here often, you know I've been really digging this album, and I just have to say that this is probably the most accurate review I've ever read.

"The Raveonettes' rote reinterpretations inevitably grow a little tiresome (closer "New York Was Great" is imminently forgettable), especially after you've patiently swallowed ten or eleven fizzy versions of the exact same thing."

The album is only 30 minutes long, but it seems that it would have been better still to drop two songs. "New York Was Great", "Noisy Summer", and "The Truth About Johnny" I think could all be lost. They're good songs, but make 'em B-sides to singles or something. Best song is Untamed Girl. Remember, That Great Love Sound, Heartbreak Stroll, geez there are so many catchy songs on this! I like this trend of the 30 minute album.

------------------

Oh, and I added a few new blog links over there---->

And I dumped a boring one.

I won't be able to see Broadcast tonight, but I'm going up to see Forgot Cassettes. You can see pictures of them that Jenyk.com took when they came through New York. Here.

Bass Pro Shop whoopdedo

what i'm listening to Right Now: Muddy Waters - I Just Want to Make Love to You
_________________________

Well the Bass Pro Shop finally opened, and this being a website about how things are in the "Real World" I thought I'd give all you big city types the real deal experience of what excites the folks down here in Virginia.

They were literally bussing people in from satellite parking lots. It was on the front page of the local paper.

They got stuffed animals everywhere. How many animals have to die for one Bass Pro shop? Approx. 114 it turns out.

Badgers!!! We Don't need no Stinking badgers!!

And watch out!! There's an Owl!!

They got a cotton-pickin' waterfall in this place!! And a huge fish tank filled with Catfish, Gar, and BASS!! Three different types of bass.

She can't decide between pontoon boat or a speedboat:

So if you're ever passing thru Hampton, VA and you need a tree stand, you know where to go.

Oh, and afterwards we went to 99 Main St. Restaurant where they have a pregnant ghost bartender.

In keeping with the outdoorsey theme of the night, I had the special. Herb Crusted Rack of Boar in an Apple Chutney Sauce. Carnivorous!!

Test your 80's lyrics knowledge

Click here for the 80's Lyric Quiz (opens in same window)

I got a 62, but I misspelled Goddess as godess so it woulda been a bit higher.

Oh, no cheating, you have to go straight down the list and fill it in fast. Don't spend more than 5 minutes on the whole thing. (those are my rules, not the owner of the quiz).

Good Luck!

PS I saw this at the Black Table which is a great website.

No one cares. Or do they?

what i'm listening to Right Now: The Warlocks - Jam of the Warlock
_________________________

Aye-aye mates! Britney's back with a new album which means Media-Blitz!!

Oye! What in the H is she wearing!! I wonder why she never turns her back to the camera.

Is she in control of her publicity machine??

ITEM: Britney says "Not Today, not Tomorrow, not ever!!" to Today show. Pink gets dumped by Today show, she says, "Shoot, I don't need no stinking Today show. I'm going to Good Morning America!"

Oh, I don't care. I don't care. Why do we all care?

But I might actually buy that Pink album.

what i'm listening to Right Now: Grand Funk Railroad - Closer to Home
____________________________

I'm not going to tell you how I know this, but Led Zeppelin's "Trampled Under Foot" is a great song to get it on with.

Of course, this advice is for all you happily married couples out there, but if you've only got 30 minutes and you want to make the most of it, use this sure-fired orgasm recipe.

Set your winamp like this:
--------------------------------

Hey Hey What Can I Do (for undressing and the initial snuggles and kisses)
The Battle of Evermore (for the Bolero-like slow build)
When the Levee Breaks (for pacing, take your time, enjoy it)
Trampled Under Foot (This signals the time for the heavy stuff, and your payoff)
Ramble On (for the Post-coital snuggles and getting dressed)

Your welcome.

what i'm listening to Right Now: The Sounds, Living in America - Rock n Roll
____________________________

Man the Sounds show was really great. Except it looked like a junior high school pep rally. I guess Rooney skews toward a younger demographic. The Rooney guy threw his water bottle cap out at these 14 year old girls and they were on the ground trying to get it. It was cute seeing all these little girls singing along.

Oh and doesn't the Sounds bass player look like the girl from Magdalene Sisters movie? The one that died of anorexia?

Strokes Live in Baltimore bootlegs!!

what i'm listening to Right Now: The Strokes, live in Baltimore Oct. 12 2003 - Under Control
_________________________

I can't believe it!! This is the show I saw! Get it while it lasts!

Outkast on SNL

Man that Andre guy from Outkast is a Super-Duper SuperStar!! Mark my words, his star is going up, up, UP!

And I made a mix CD for my friend Jules. Trying to get her into some newer bands.

The Sounds - Seven Days a Week
Kings of Leon - Happy Alone
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Y Control
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps
Regina Spektor - Samson
Regina Spektor - Ne Me Quitte Pas
Outkast - Hey Ya!
Longwave - I Know it's Coming Someday
Longwave - Tidal Wave
Kings of Leon - Red Morning Light
Kings of Leon - Joe's Head
Modest Mouse - Lives
Modest Mouse - Gravity Rides Everything
Kimya Dawson - Chemistry
Kimya Dawson - Being Cool
Marshal Tucker Band - Can't You See
Kings of Leon - Trani
Roger McGuinn - Ballad of Easy Rider

Man, I'm good. It's a perfect Sine wave. Start high, fast, (Sounds, Kings) bring down a bit (slow YYY, Regina), jump it back up to keep 'em awake (Outkast), then slow it down just a hair (Longwave) before bringing it back up at the mid point (Kings of Leon). Then the slow build. (Modest Mouse) Slowly, slowly, slowly upwards (Kimya). We're at the plateau stage, hold on baby, i'm feeling good (Marshal Tucker), then....release (kings)!!! Then the snuggling afterwards (McGuinn).

As you can see, I've been embracing the long taboo of the mix tape. Repeating songs by the same artist. This was such a no-no in my younger days. But it reflects my change in how I listen to music. I used to be such a "greatest hits" type. Now I'm much more into albums. So I wanted to capture the feeling of a mix of albums rather than a mix of songs. I think that would be a useful shuffle function on a multiple cd player. Play two songs on this cd, then two songs of that cd, etc.

Feel Free to scroll up and check out my Archives! Thanks for stopping by!
