Oohlas, Bright Light Fever, and the Zutons - the Stolen Transmission response

Hey Andrew,

Yeah, I finally got up, walked over and found the name to the ZUTONS cd. I blogged the correction. In fact, I actually blogged our whole correspondence. I linked up a lot of the stuff we talked about. There have been some good clicks on Bright Light Fever and on the Oohlas stuff. No one clicked the Silverman clip even though I linked it up twice in the post. The kids like Stolen Transmission Records. Loathe Sarah Silverman. My blog is proof.

I thought that my words on how I was going to buy the Oohlas album even though I didn't get it for free was a good sign to my readers that it was worth buying.

I hope it works. I like it when recording artists make record companies more money. Then trickle-down economics can work its magic!!!!

Thanks again for the cds!

Email Thread about Stolen Transmission Records

Well, first of all, Thank You for sending me the CD's. It was very nice of you.

I was a little disappointed that you didn't send the oohlas cd as you promised. But no worries, I'm going to buy it anyway because I've been hearing the first two songs (and Small Parts) twice a day on my Rhapsody player. Those first two songs have been right at the top of my morning playlist (along with Ramblin' Jack Elliot's version of "Tennessee Stud", various Stellastarr*, and Laid Back's "White Horse").

(Hear the second song from the Oohlas album)

There is another song later on in the Oohlas album that is really good (after the dreadful "TV Dinner") but I never remember to find out what it's called. I need to pay attention next time to what the songs called next time I hear it.

I went to a local independent Record Store, Norfolk's own Relative Theory (www.relativetheoryrecords.com) and was going to buy the Oohlas CD since I liked it so much. But they didn't have it in stock. I bought the new Broadcast B-sides collection and a Demetri Martin comedy CD instead.

How does the Oohlas make money by my listening to their record on Rhapsody?

You sent me Bright Light Fever. It is not my kinda thing. It ain't bad. It just ain't my thing you know?

You sent me another CD that was a nice surprise. Zulons? Zaxons? I'm typing during Project Runway so I can't get up to go find out but they had some good stuff on there. I listened to it while trying to plug the leak in my attic and then when I was cleaning my hunting rifle in preparation for sighting it in this Saturday. (I finally walked to my desk. They're the Klaxons)

So thanks for the CD's.

Hey man,

Yep, I'm back blogging again. If you got more oohlas I'd like to hear it. I heard the opening track off their new album and it was really awesome, but then I heard TV Dinner and it was bad. So that makes two out of three that I liked a lot so that's pretty good so far.

Their album is out now isn't it?

Hey Andrew,

I love this Oolah's song! Thanks!! I'll see what I can do to blog about it.

And thanks for kind words! I got an new harddrive here and it seems to be working o.k. so far. I'm back on and I've got a lot of emails here. One hundred seventy nine. Plus I have to deal with losing all my pictures, video, and music from the old hard drive.

I love checking this stuff out, and I love bragging about the stuff I like. Blogging is still iffy though till I find out if I'm still have a job Oct. 1. Yikes!! Plus, my wife is healing after some stuff (long, sad story). I hope to get back into it more soon enough.

I wish you luck if you'll wish me the same!

Thanks,
-Matt

Bright Light Fever made up of four guys (headed by Evan Ferro, the driving force behind the group) writes songs that are immediately engaging yet entirely pensive and are reminiscent of Bleach-era Nirvana and early White Stripes. They bring danceable rhythms, story-based lyrics, warm and passionate vocal, and a rawness in songwriting that is arresting for any listening. The fun doesn’t stop there either, Joby from The Bronx has produced The Evening Owl, and it doesn’t get much better than that!

The Oohlas, a Los Angeles based trio that is destined for commercial success with the release of Best Stop Pop. The Oohlas dirty yet accessible production of mid-nineties alternative rock has a classic feel without sounding retro. Their beautiful melodies, interesting arrangements and sophisticated compositions that will no doubt invoke flattering comparisons to bands such as Belly, Veruca Salt, Weezer and perhaps the Breeders. As a side note, The Oohlas includes former Everclear drummer, Greg Eklund.

The trendsetting new record label Stolen Transmission signs both
Bright Light Fever and The Oohlas with debut albums
set for a September 26th release, so watch out!

Stolen Transmission, built on a community of music thirsty kids, combines the back-end resources of “major label” and the DIY ethics and ambition of an indie label. Stolen Transmission offers its bands and fans the best of both worlds. Their aim is not only to discover, develop and showcase the most promising artists in the country, but to also build a truly supportive, creative and (most importantly) fun community around the label and its bands.

This makes me laugh all the time....

Aircraft Carrier George H. W. Bush Christening Today

Exactly 1.5 miles from my house sits the Aircraft Carrier George H. W. Bush. It will be Christened today with George Sr and Jr. Rumsfeld will be there. AND, John Warner-Taylor, George Allen and Timmy Kaine too. Whew. Lots of heavy weights will be in my neighborhood soon.

That's why I'll be spending the night in Washington, DC.

I'm not really leaving town because of the Christening. I'd actually like to see it. They are kinda neat. I rode my bike over to the USS Ronald Reagan ceremony years ago. Saw Bushju (Bush+Junior=Bushju) and Nancy. It rained that day too. I still use my souvenir USS Ronald Reagan Insulated Travel Mug. My Ronald Reagan coloring book is out in the tool shed still (I don't know how it wound up back there but it's still there.)

Anyway, the Sailboat Show in Annapolis is the real reason we driving up to DC. I'm thinking of stopping by WAG at the Black Cat. Do people really dance there? We're staying on Pennsylvania NW across from George Washington U. so maybe we'll just stay around there.

So, If you get a USS George H. W. Bush catalog Saturday, and you don't want it, give it to me so I can add to my collection.

In the meantime check out these pictures of the Aircraft Carrier being built:

The biggest bummer is that I'll never get to paint a plein air picture of it in the Dry Dock.

New Regina Spektor

According to Regina's Website (linked as always, over there-->), the full live Regina Spektor show from Oct 3 (today-ish) will be broadcast on NPR's All Songs Considered (also linked over there-->).

So I can't wait to hear that.

Until then, please, please, please listen to her second album (and the 'original' version of Samson) by clicking here:

Regina Spektor - Songs (full album)

I read an interview where she talks about hating this older version of "Samson" and, of course, I can't stand to hear that since that's my version that I'm so familiar with. The new version will take some getting used to.

Def listen to "Daniel Cowman" which is one of the GREATEST songs ever written. I also LOVE, LOVE, (unironic) LOVE "Reading Time with Pickle". So click that link and listen. I've flogged it here for years because it's that awesome.

So listen, listen, listen, and then we'll listen to Regina Spektor's Live set on NPR.

Feel Free to scroll up and check out my Archives! Thanks for stopping by!
