"Great article Derek! But I think how funny the act of yelling "Freebird" can be is inversely proportional to how much the style of the band resembles Skynyrd's. In other words, if you were to yell it at a Jackyl show it wouldn't be funny at all, because they had it slotted for later in the set anyway - after the chainsaw solo of course. But if you yelled it at an Interpol show, instant hilarity.

Man, reading the comments to this great article made me laugh. Last time I heard someone yell "freebird" was at the Regina Spektor show in August. It's a tradition that just won't die. It's not clever anymore. I like the idea of yelling "It's Raining Men" which seems pretty funny.
Also, this ties into The Onion this week. Concert Ruined by Guy Enjoying Himself.

Dean's Iowa Speech from the Crowd
That damn liberal media blew that Dean Speech all out of proportion. See the speech from the crowds perspective. He seems like a normal guy to me. Not like Kerry's dreadful speeches. Kerry's such a Flip-Flopper. I don't think Kerry knows what he believes.

Mark my words, a vote for Kerry is a vote for Bush. No WAY that guy wins back the white house. Dean or Edwards are the Dems only chances. Fight Fire with Fire, I Say.
Disclaimer: I'm a registered Republican, but NOT a Bush supporter. I live in a state where anyone, regardless of party, can vote in the primary. I'm not fully decided yet, but I'm leaning towards Dean. But I want to pay more attention to Edwards in the next two weeks (VA's primary is Feb. 10).

Just go Buy it Already
I was lookin' over my web stats, and someone keeps hitting this site lookin' for Liz Phair Why Can't I wavs/mp3s.
Hey, if you really want to hear that song, turn on a radio, wait five minutes.
If you really want to listen to some Liz Phair, go over to one of the Legal download sites, like Itunes or Napster or MusicMatch (or even Walmart), and download it, and while you're there, get Firewalker since that's actually a good song of her recent album. Just email me already, and I'll buy it for you.
And while we're on legal download services, what is the deal with not being able to listen to the tracks in my player of choice? I've used Winamp for the longest. I have my entire library set up for Winamp. I try to import tracks into MusicMatch, Itunes, Media Player etc. It creates this jumbled mess of artist names, I don't know what to do with it (I'm a computer professional, and it ain't worth my time to redo my huge library of songs to fit their silly system of so-called organization). They take up a huge amount of memory, they take up precious taskbar space. Nothing is as good as Winamp.
Well, I thought I could use Napster to get wma files into Winamp (plus I have an Old-school RCA K@zoo mp3 player that plays wma) so I tried that. Doesn't play in Winamp because of the copy protection.
So, Long story/rant short, Itunes m4p files will play in Winamp 5 which just came out. But you have to have a plugin. So go get winamp 5. Go get the plugin here. and use Itunes. Napster needs to get off their arses and get wma's that'll work in winamp (and my RCA K@zoo) or they'll never see me again.

can now hear it from us. Franz have been placed at no.2 in the midweek
Top 40 chart count all week, until NOW. Kelis has jumped ahead of us,
but only by 140 ish sales. Seriously, 140 extra copies!
Michelle from Pop Academy Idol (whatever) is at number 1 and making her
owners very happy. Things have become very crazy with Franz Ferdinand
recently, it could only become history in the making for our little
band on a tiny TRULY independent label like Domino to hit number 1.
We all know it's possible to download the track and therefore we let
you download our FIRST single off the site but it would be so great if
everyone on this mailing list grabbed an actual copy. The CD is ?1.99
and the 7" is only 99p. What are you waiting for? BUY! BUY! BUY!
(before Saturday please) and then we will invite as many of you as we
are allowed to Top Of The Pops. If everyone that has downloaded Darts
Of Pleasure went out and bought Take Me Out then we would be number
1!!!

A Pitchforkian Record Review
what i'm listening to Right Now: Bob Dylan, Live 1966 - I Don't Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Have Met)

I don't know I if I told you, but I'm wanna those people that are feeding the Franz Ferdinand hype monster. Their album comes out in the UK on Feb. 9th. And I thought I would pop over to Pitchforkmedia.com and see what they had to say about Franz Ferdinand.
Well, they're still looking for writers, and I clicked on that link and seriously considered throwing my hat into that ring of rock pretention.
Then I read the Franz Ferdinand review:
"Strikingly Interpolian as they lunge in alongside a healthy drum..."
Later on, in a blurb for Ellen Allien:
"...Kraftwerkian in its precision..."
Interpolian?? Kraftwerkian???
I don't think I should review records in any published way. A weblog is my own place to take a stand. To be given a record and told to review it seven days later, well, heck, that doesn't sound like fun at all. Sounds like it sucks the fun right out of listening to music.
So I guess I'll just read reviews, and leave the writing of them to the Pitchforkians out there.

Celeb Mole is Back!
Oh crap! Just as I was getting started on my TV-is-evil discussion with Anise, Celeb Mole is back on the air. Looks like two hours of TV a week for me (the other hour being "Less then Perfect" and "King of Queens"). Of course, it might not be any good without Kathy Griffin. We'll see.
I think the world would be a better place if everyone just watched two hours of TV a week.

Man, I love this!

See this is a best album list. Every track on this is good.

Yep, this is a great album. After "I Can't Win" I'm DYING for more!
1) Longwave - The Strangest Things
YES!!! All you Sorry bastards paid this no mind. But that's why you're all lucky to have me! I'm telling you that "Less than Perfect" is worth your time, and that Longwave's album is the best of the year. Go out see for yourself!

Greatest Week in Rock History
Salon makes it's case for the Greatest Week in Rock History.
As for me, since it's a new year, or so I hear, I wanted to post my own lists that seem to be all the rage this time of year.
Top 5 Live shows I saw in 2003:
5) Oct. 12: Strokes/Kings Of Leon/Regina Spektor in Baltimore
Strokes always put on a good live show, but Regina Spektor and the Kings of Leon are what put this show on the list.
4) Nov 5: Rooney/The Sounds @ the Norva
Awesome show. The Norva is the greatest venue I've been to yet, and it's just across the river! The Sounds opened, and impressed me greatly. I listen to their stuff a lot more than Rooney now. Sorry Rooney. (Although "If it were up to me" by Rooney is one of the best tracks of the year).
3) July 19: Dirtbombs @ Siren Festival, Coney Island
What an adventure this trip was. The 24 Hours in NYC trip. All of Siren was cool, but The Dirtbombs show (on the "small" stage too!) were so great that it gets number 3 on my list.
2) Mar. 19: Mooney Suzuki/Raveonettes/Longwave at America University
The Iraq war deadline was this night. On the campus of American University, a few blocks from the White House. No Cover. Maybe thirty people in the crowd. Watching CNN with Sune from the Raveonettes. Just an amazing night!
1) Oct 7: Kimya Dawson/Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players in Charlottesville
The best discovery of the year for me. Kimya Dawson is an amazing talent! I'm gonna save up and hire her to come play in my town. If I could get a few hundred together, I bet she'd come on down, huh? She could sleep in my spare bedroom, and I could book her into all the local coffee places. I could open the shows with four of five of my songs, and then my friend Paul could play four or five of his, and then Kimya would be the big attraction. Yeah, I bet the William and Mary crowd would dig that. Kimya could probably sell a bunch of cds after the shows. People around here just haven't heard her stuff.
Kimya Dawson was the best show I saw this year.
*Special Mention: Feb 18 Richie Havens @ Starr Hill. The man is a legend, and he don't put on no nostalgia show. This is a modern, relevant, amazing performer!
